A massive wildfire, suspected to have originated from jhum cultivation, broke out at the border of Humtso village in Wokha district on March 17.
The fire was first reported at 10 a.m., according to Wokha Village Council chairman, Vandan Erui. Eyewitnesses said that it reportedly started from jhum fields, with strong winds accelerating the blaze, now advancing toward Wokha town and just 2 km away from Vankhosung.
Over 30-40 volunteers from Humtso village, two fire tenders, and 25 personnel from the SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, Home Guards, and Civil Defence are battling the flames.
While firefighters managed to douse the fire in parts of Humtsoe village, the situation remains critical as it continues to spread. Volunteers from Wokha and Humtso villages, along with firefighting personnel, were actively working to contain the blaze. Wokha village council chairman has urged the public to exercise caution and avoid any activities that could further aggravate the fire.
