The Western Sümi Students Union (WSSU), in collaboration with district administration officials and its affiliated units, has conducted raids on 70 shops in and around educational institutions and medical establishments.
In a press release, WSSU informed that during the operation, various tobacco and cigarette products were found being illegally sold within restricted zones.
The release stated that despite repeated warnings issued by the WSSU office and the concerned administration, many shopkeepers have continued to defy the regulations, putting the health and well-being of students and the general public at risk.
The union reiterated the urgent need for strict enforcement of these laws to safeguard public health, particularly in sensitive areas like schools, colleges and hospitals.
WSSU has issued a stern warning to all shopkeepers engaged in this unlawful activity to immediately cease such sales. Any further violations will not be tolerated, and the union will ensure that strict action is taken as per the provisions of the COTPA Act, 2003.
The union extended its sincere gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner for deploying officials to assist in this operation, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to enforcing public health laws and ensuring compliance.
The WSSU affirmed that it will continue to conduct regular inspections in collaboration with the district administration to ensure strict adherence to the law. It cautioned that routine checks will be carried out from time to time, and any violations found will be dealt with firmly.
The union urged all shopkeepers to comply with regulations and avoid legal consequences. It also called upon the concerned authorities to take swift and decisive measures in addressing this issue and maintaining public safety.
