Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has strongly condemned the alleged molestation of a 21-year-old salesgirl by an employee of a gas station at Kohima on March 27, 2025.
In a statement, NSCW chairperson W Nginyeih Konyak described the act as “appalling”, which highlighted the “persistent threats to women’s safety and security in private sector as well.”
The commission asserted that the incident exposed serious lapses in security and failure to ensure a safe working environment at workplaces for women across the state.
In spite of sending several reminders of the apex court direction with regard to implementation of the Sexual Harassment at Work Place (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, the NSCW said multiple cases were on higher side in Nagaland.
Therefore, NSCW has called upon all the stakeholders both in government and private to adhere to the direction in setting up of internal complaint committee and grievance redressal officer to address the issue on fast-track mode.
The commission said it was unacceptable that women and girls continued to face such dangers while pursuing their education and careers.
NSCW has demanded a swift and thorough investigation, strict punishment for the perpetrator and immediate measures to strengthen safe and security at workplaces both in Government and private sector. “Women and girls safety must be prioritized and such crimes must not go unpunished,” NSCW said.
Meanwhile, NSCW has requested the state level as well as district local committee to constitute Internal Complaints Committee under the supervision of District Administration for unorganized sector and to take necessary action and ensure protection and safe working environment as envisaged as per the law.
