Consumer rights highlighted at awareness prog in Phek

DIMAPUR

A Consumer Protection Awareness programme was held in Phek on June 14, focusing on the rights of consumers and the need for greater awareness around safe and fair trade practices.
Speaking at the event, Mezivolu T Therieh, District & Sessions Judge and chairperson of Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA), highlighted key features of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which replaced the 1986 Act. She informed that the updated law addresses digital commerce, false advertising, and unfair trade practices through stricter penalties, mediation options, and the formation of the Central Consumer Protection Authority.
Therieh encouraged local councils to act as mediators in resolving consumer issues and called for the setting up of redressal and mediation cells in partnership with civil society. She also pointed out that under the 2019 Act, consumers can file complaints from their place of residence—even for online purchases.
Shiekhozo Rhakho, Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), urged local leaders to raise awareness on quality products and services, while Thejakhrienuo Nisa, ADC Phek and executive officer of Phek Town Council, reminded citizens of their right to safe and reliable goods.
The programme included an interactive session led by Sekhotso Rokha, panel lawyer of PDLSA. It was chaired by Vekuta Khamo, vice president of Phek Town Chakhesang Students Union (PTCSU), and Vezovo Rhakho, PTCSU president, delivered the welcome address.
Organised by the department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection and PDLSA, in collaboration with PTCSU, the event saw participation from members of the Phek District Chamber of Commerce & Industry, colony chairpersons, youth leaders, and GBs.
