DoAH&VS issues advisory on ASF

DIMAPUR, JUN 25 (NPN)

In view of the ongoing outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Nagaland, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences (DoAH&VS) has advised all pig farmers and stakeholders to adopt the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
African Swine Fever is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs with100% mortality once infected. Currently, there is no available vaccine or treatment.
African Swine Fever is transmitted through direct contact with infected pigs, pork, or contaminated feed, water, clothing, tools, vehicles, and equipment. Human movement and illegal transportation of pigs/pork could also contribute to spread.
Symptoms include high fever, loss of appetite; weakness and sudden death; red or blue blotches on skin (especially ears, abdomen) and diarrhoea, vomiting, coughing, or difficulty in breathing
Highlighting mandatory biosecurity measures to be taken, the farmers have been urged not to introduce new pigs into their farm without proper quarantine; avoid contact with other farms or animals; regularly disinfect pig pens, equipment, and clothing; restrict entry of outsiders and vehicles into farm premises; not to slaughter, consume, or sell sick or dead pigs and dispose of carcasses safely as per veterinary advice. Farmer have been advised to report any sudden death or signs of illness in pigs to the nearest veterinary centre immediately.
The department also urged the farmers to remain alert and strictly follow all advisories. It also sought cooperation of every farmer to contain the spread of ASF in the state.
For any support or to report suspected cases, farmer can contact their nearest veterinary officer.
