Pegula beats Swiatek to clinch Bad Homburg title ahead of Wimbledon 2025

CHENNAI, JUN 28 (AGENCIES)

Jessica Pegula beat Iga Swiatek 6-4, 7-5 to win the WTA 500 tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany, ahead of Wimbledon 2025,reports Sportsstar.
Pegula, the top-seeded American, clinched her third title this season after Austin (hard court) and Charleston (clay). It was her second triumph on grass after the win in Berlin last year and overall, ninth singles trophy of her career as she took down the fourth-seeded Pole in an hour and 46 minutes. The 31-year-old Pegula broke Swiatek in the seventh game of the opener and 11th game of the second set while saving the only breaking point she faced on her own serve.
“I know you say you can’t play on grass but you are very, very good on grass,” Pegula said, addressing Swiatek after the match. “It was a special week.”
It was the fourth win for the American in her last six meetings with Swiatek, who now leads the head-to-head 6-5. For Swiatek, who shed tears while waiting for the trophy ceremony, it was still a successful week after reaching her first career final on the surface.
“You have an amazing game and you showed it throughout the tournament,” Swiatek told Pegula. “Hopefully we will have many more finals together.”
World No. 3 Pegula, who finished runner-up at US Open 2024, begins her campaign at Wimbledon next week with a first-round clash against World No. 122 Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy. Former World No. 1 Swiatek, who has slipped to eighth in the WTA Rankings, is a five-time Major winner but yet to win a tournament since clinching her fourth French Open title in 2024. She takes on Russian World No. 63 Polina Kudermetova in her campaign opener at The Championships.
Both Pegula and Swiatek have never been past the quarterfinals at the grass Major, which takes place from June 30 to July 13 this year.
