KU warns ULFA(I) againstall activities in Mon district

DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN)

Konyak Union (KU) has issued a renewed and stern warning to the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) [ULFA(I)] to immediately cease all forms of activity within Konyak jurisdiction.
In a statement, KU reiterated its earlier public appeal and warning issued on April 27, 2021, in connection with ULFA(I)’s alleged involvement in abduction and extortion activities in Assam while using Mon district as a safe haven or strategic hideout.
However, KU said it had learnt that the group continues to operate and remain active in the area. Such blatant disregard for the union’s earlier appeal is unacceptable and the union would no longer remain a mute spectator, KU stated.
It further warned all factions and individuals engaged in anti-social or disruptive activities to desist immediately, adding that the union shall not be held accountable for any consequences that may arise from decisive action taken against such perpetrators. Furthermore, the Union has urged Indian security forces to exercise utmost restraint and refrain from harassing innocent public and daily wage earners merely on suspicion of association with underground activities without credible evidence. It warned that such actions often appear to be driven by ulterior motives– such as appeasing superiors or seeking promotions and rewards.
KU also appealed to the security forces and concerned authorities to refrain from booking innocent citizens under harsh legal provisions without thorough and proper verification.
It expressed deep concern that, in pursuit of bail and legal redress, many individuals are compelled to sell ancestral lands, homes, cultivated fields, and other vital properties just to secure bail.
Meanwhile, KU reminded that the genocide of 2021 Oting massacre, resulting from negligence by the security forces, remains fresh in the collective memory of the Konyak people.
