Incessant rains wreak havoc in various parts of Nagaland

Incessant rain over the last few days across Nagaland caused inundation of many low-lying areas in Dimapur and Niuland districts and overflow of streams and landslide in Kohima.
In Dimapur, downpour during the past 24 hours led to waterlogging across low lying areas of the city disrupting normal life and traffic snarl till noon on Saturday.
Even the level of the Dhansiri river crossed previous level of decades and threatened some buildings whose foundations were constructed perilously at the river edge. The unprecedented downpour between 1am and 5am Saturday, left several low-lying areas inundated such as localities and roads in Half Nagarjan, Super Market, Walford Colony, Burma Camp, Dhobinala, Sachu Colony, and Marwari Patti area.
In several places, waterlogging caused water to flow inside homes and shops forcing some residents to temporarily evacuate or move belongings to safer places.
At several pockets of the city, vehicles were stranded as they could not pass through partially submerged roads. Residents in the affected localities said they expected authorities to initiate long-term flood mitigation measures caused mainly due to poor drainage systems and blocked culverts during every monsoon season.
Sachu colony chairman, Ketousakuo, told Nagaland Post that over half of the residents in the colony were affected by the flood-like situation, with many homes inundated with two to three feet of water inside.
He said this was a perennial problem caused by narrow drainage since many RCC buildings have encroached the space.
Kohima: Incessant rains triggered the collapse of a retaining wall in Upper P.R. Hill Colony here on Saturday afternoon, damaging at least three vehicles.
The retaining wall, part of the Deputy Inspector General’s (DIG) office complex below the Police Headquarters (PHQ), gave way due continuous rainfall over the past few days.
The collapsed wall crushed three parked vehicles—a Gypsy, an Alto, and a Swift-belonging to local residents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. All the vehicles were completely buried under debris and loose earth.
Police personnel and emergency workers were working till late evening, to assist in recovery operations. Excavators and manual labourers were deployed to clear the debris and extract the buried vehicles.
The incident has once again highlighted the fragility of hillside infrastructure in Kohima, particularly during the monsoon season, when the risk of landslides and structural failures increases significantly.
DDMA Dimapur issues advisory: In view of the flash floods and rising water levels in rivers and streams across Dimapur due to heavy rainfall, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and chairman District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Dr Tinujongshi has advised public to refrain from going to riverside for fishing, picnic or any water related activities.
DDMA has requested all villages along river banks and the village councils to prohibit aforementioned activities till the end of monsoon season.
In case of any emergencies, one could contact State Emergency Operation Centre: 1070 (Toll free number) 0370-2291120/22, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF): 9366819486/ 7005806182.

Longleng: Heavy rainfall on July 2 & 3, 2025 caused landslide/mudslide at various places under Tamlu sub-division under Longleng district.
In a press release, extra assistant commissioner (EAC) Tamlu, Mopling M Phom, informed that three households were severely affected. The residents lost their essential commodities including clothes, furniture, utensils and consumables. With the assistance of the local volunteers, EAC said their houses were dismantled and recovered some items. The affected families were relocated to their relatives’ homes.
EAC said Tamlu administration verified and submitted report to the government for further necessary action. An amount of Rs.10,000 each was handed to the three affected households as immediate relief under ERF, DDMA Longleng.
Further, two major roads, NEC Road Tamlu-Yonglok and Buranamansang-Shetap Road were affected by landslides at various locations cutting off at least seven villages under Namsang area from Tamlu ADC Hq. EAC also informed that at least 19 households at Tamlu town and Tamlu village were affected by landslide/mudslide.
