Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) councillors led by chairperson Hukheto Yepthomi inspected the flood-affected areas under various wards Monday.
The inspection was aimed at assessing extent of damage caused by recent inundation and waterlogging and to identify the causes contributing to the situation.
The team visited several affected localities, viz., Kalibari Road, Walford Colony, Nagarjan and Burma Camp, closely examining the factors leading to waterlogging.
The team also ascertained that rampant encroachment was one of the major causes for inundation such as illegal constructions, leaving no space for proper maintenance or cleaning of the drains.
Also, the team noted that boundary walls were erected in a manner that obstructed the natural flow of water, while in some areas, the original course of inflow channels had been altered without proper engineering or construction of adequate tunnels, leading to severe blockages.
At Kalibari Road the team found the absence of a proper drainage system where existing drains were found to be clogged and poorly maintained.
DMC chairperson Hukheto emphasized developing a sense of civic responsibility among the public. He said the issue was not about assigning blame but rather identifying the causes that led to inundation and water logging due to lack of civic sense and responsibility among residents.
He recalled that last year, DMC councillors had undertaken a major cleanliness drive, working round-the-clock to clear clogged drains across the city.
Hukheto appealed the citizens to join hands with the DMC in maintaining cleanliness, refrain from encroachments, and support initiatives aimed at improving urban infrastructure to mitigate future flood risks.
