The “Care for God’s Creation” commission under the Diocese of Kohima carried out a tree plantation drive at North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), as part of its environmental awareness initiative on July 8.
The programme was led by Nosazol Charles and Rev. Fr. Chacko Karinthayil and was inspired by Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si, which calls for care and protection of the environment.
Highlighting the importance of eco-friendly practices, Nosazol Charles shared how the 5th Regional Youth Convention 2025 in Kohima created a plastic-free environment by using plant leaves and avoiding plastic bottles. He urged people to take simple steps to care for the Earth and warned against continued harm caused by human activity.
Rev. Fr. Chacko also spoke on the spiritual significance of protecting nature, calling it an act of love for God’s creation.
Students of NEISSR and members of Peace Channel took part in the drive by planting saplings around the campus.
Earlier, the programme began with an interaction session chaired by NEISSR vice principal, Rev. Fr. G.L. Khing, and concluded with a prayer led by St. Joseph Parish, Chümoukedima priest, Rev. Fr. George Rino.
