Puisa Kotha Hunibo? Don’t be SCAMMED!

Over the past year, I’ve heard many stories of people being scammed. But this one was different, it happened to someone I know. Maybe that’s why it stayed with me.
In 2022, a young Theologian from Pfutsero received a message on Instagram, claiming to be a nun from a Catholic charity. She said he’d been chosen to receive a gift package- Bibles, a laptop, an iPhone, and £2,000 in cash. With parcel photos and tracking updates, it all looked genuine.
Then came a call from an “airport agent,” asking for Rs. 22,000 as GST. Unsure, he asked around, including family, and was told such charges were normal. So, he paid.
The next day, a fresh demand came, Rs. 96,000 for a “certificate” to release the cash. That’s when he paused, researched, and realised it was a scam. He lost Rs. 22,000, but thankfully didn’t lose more.
His story isn’t unique. We’ve all heard of someone, a friend, cousin, or neighbour who’s been tricked.
Many Nagas, whether in towns, villages, or outside the state, have fallen prey to similar frauds. The truth is, scams don’t come with a warning. They show up disguised as gifts, love, jobs, or opportunity.
There’s no one-size-fits-all guide. And the worst part? There’s no textbook to avoid them, every scam looks different.
But it’s not about being afraid. It’s about being a little smarter every day. Here are a few simple ways to protect yourself and your money:

  • Be careful who you share your bank info, Aadhaar, or OTP with.
  • Don’t click on random links (for money, bank account, cashback etc.)
  • Use masked/virtual Aadhaar whenever possible
  • Say NO to quick online loans, NO to “buy now, pay later” etc.
  • Visit your bank if in doubt
  • Report fraud at 1930 (helpline)
