Redevelopment of Dimapur Railways into a world class railway station seems to be stuck due to inability of the state government in handing over erstwhile railway lands which are under occupation.
When contacted Saturday, over the fate of the redevelopment, a senior NFR official said the ball was in the state government’s court and further delay could jeopardize the project.
The official who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed the hope that the state government will be able to hand over the land for redevelopment project. Dimapur railway station was started in 1903 and is among the oldest railway stations in the region. Dimapur railway station boasts of being the second highest revenue earner for Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR).
Approximately 30.283 hectares out of 53.806, is reportedly encroached upon. The land issue threatens to stall the redevelopment project of Dimapur Railway Station, which was allocated Rs 283 crore for upgrading. The redevelopment at Dimapur railway station envisages vast increase of the main station building from its current 5160 square meters to 17,484 square meters including huge waiting areas with sophisticated passenger facilities, food plazas, green buildings, solar panels, and rainwater collection.
