In response to increasing cryospheric hazards in high-altitude Himalayan regions, a joint team from Nagaland University, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Sikkim University will assess glacial lake threats in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang region.
The research project, funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, aims to map potentially dangerous glacial lakes and recommend safety measures. The project—titled “Mapping Hazard Zonation of the High-Altitude Lake Breaches for Sustainable Development in the Tawang Region of Arunachal Himalaya”—will run from 2025 to 2028.
Led by Dr. Manasi Debnath of Nagaland University, with co-investigators Dr. Milap Chand Sharma (JNU) and Dr. Rajesh Kumar (Sikkim University), the team will use satellite data, field surveys, and modeling tools to assess risks linked to glacier retreat and permafrost melting.
The outcome is expected to help reduce disaster risks and improve climate resilience for local communities in the Eastern Himalaya.
