NSDMA forecasts heavy rain, t-storms till Jul 23

DIMAPUR, JUL 15 (NPN)

In view of the ongoing monsoon conditions, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home department, has issued an eight-day weather advisory from July 16 to 23, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the state, with increased risk of waterlogging and flash floods in low-lying areas.
According to a weather update, heavy rain and thunderstorm was expected in the districts of Mon, Tseminyu, Niuland, Dimapur and Kohima between July 16 and 21. The remaining districts were expected to receive light to moderate rainfall which could intensify during this period.
As a result, NSDMA has emphasised that it was vital to take necessary measures during this period, including avoiding lightning strikes and high winds which could disrupt communication and connectivity.
Due to the risk of high precipitation in the hill sector, Nagaland’s lowland and foothill districts, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli, were vulnerable to water-logging and flash floods.
In this regard and in light of the current flood situation, low-lying districts have been requested to implement precautionary measures. These include keeping valuable documents and item in safe locker to prevent loss and damage, evacuate low lying areas if advised by authorities, keep an eye for gas leak, avoid food that might have come in contact with flood water, avoid entering flood waters or driving through flooded areas, disconnect and place electrical appliances off ground level, boil water before drinking or use chlorinated water, and remain alert to any open drain holes or flood channels.
NSDMA has urged the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period, while requesting all district disaster management authorities and other line departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during the monsoon season. For any emergency, people have been advised to contact State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) on toll-free number 1070.
