7th NE Pencak Silat Championship 2025 kicks off

The 7th edition of the North East Pencak Silat Championship 2025 got underway at Hayiro Park, Dimapur, on Tuesday. The two-day tournament is being organized by Nagaland Pencak Silat Association (NPSA) under the aegis of the Indian Pencak Silat Federation and North East Pencak Silat Federation.
Gracing the inaugural programme as special guest, Executive Engineer (Housing), Division No. 1 Kohima, Er Abija Khing expressed his enthusiasm for the sport despite, adding that he was attending the event as a sports enthusiast.
Pencak Silat being a new sport in the state, he however expressed his happiness to see young athletes from the state taking part in the sport, and also congratulated NPSA for already producing national champions in the sport.
“Sports inculcate discipline and determination, qualities that shape successful individuals” Khing said, adding that this would shape the character of a child from young age which would help them be successful in whatever field they choose. He later encouraged participants to treat the tournament as a valuable learning experience and a stepping stone towards greater achievements.
It may be noted that a total of 270 participants from across the Northeast, including Nagaland, Bodoland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Sikkim, along with personnel from Assam Rifles, are competing for top honours in 70 weight categories and four Artistic Event categories for both boys and girls.
Among the 270 participants, the youngest athletes in the championship are five year old Shetmorin Dilbung, and six-year-old Ikuku Chishi, both from Nagaland.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Information and Publicity Secretary, NPSA, Diana, invocation offered by Music Director, Lhomithi Baptist Church Dimapur, Khekaho H Ayemi, and welcome address by secretary, NPSA, Ghunato Sema. The championship would conclude on Wednesday, July 17, whereby Commissioner of Police, K Sophie, would be attending the closing ceremony as the guest of honor.
