In yet another incident of human-wildlife conflict, a herd of wild elephants entered Old Aree village under Wokha district on the night of July 26, causing extensive damage to temporary huts and cultivated fields.
While the exact number of elephants could not be confirmed, villagers reported that the animals moved in groups and remained in the vicinity for several hours, trampling crops and damaging structures.
Residents expressed deep concern over the destruction, stating that most families in the area depend solely on agriculture for their livelihood. “Everything we had cultivated has been destroyed. We don’t know how we’ll survive in the coming months,” said a villager.
Apart from the loss of crops, villagers also conveyed growing fear for their safety, saying that elephant sightings near human settlements had become increasingly frequent. Many said they now avoid stepping outside after dark due to the threat posed by the animals.
They lamented that such incidents have occurred in the past as well, but no long-term solution has been implemented.
The villagers said the matter has been reported to the local administration and appealed for urgent intervention, including permanent measures to prevent future incursions and to ensure the safety of residents. They also called on the authorities to provide compensation for the damages incurred.
