Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement (NCYM) celebrated the Fifth World Day for “Grandparents and the Elderly” at Priests Home, Chumoukedima, on July 27. The observance coincided with the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus.
This year’s theme, chosen by Pope Francis, was “Blessed are those who have not lost Hope” (Sirach 14:2), highlighting the value of hope in old age and promoting intergenerational unity.
The event honoured nine elderly priests of the Diocese of Kohima, pioneers in spreading the Gospel to remote regions of Nagaland. The day’s highlight was the Holy Eucharistic celebration, with Fr. OC Abraham, the senior-most priest in the diocese, as the main celebrant. NCYM also organised a felicitation programme to express gratitude for the priests’ contributions to the church and community.
The day was celebrated across churches and centres, recognising the wisdom and loving service of grandparents and the elderly to the church and families.
