In anticipation of National Space Day (NSD), Tiyi Hall in Wokha was abuzz with energy as students, scientists and educators gathered for a daylong pre-celebration aimed at promoting awareness and enthusiasm for space science. The event was jointly organized by the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) and the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre (NGISRSC), under the Planning & Transformation Department.
According to a DIPR report, the celebration comes ahead of the newly declared “National Space Day” on August 23, commemorating India’s landmark Chandrayaan-3 lunar landing. Nationwide initiatives are being led by the Department of Space to spotlight India’s achievements in space exploration, with NESAC coordinating efforts in the Northeast and NGISRSC overseeing activities within Nagaland.
The inaugural session was chaired by Nounesenuo S. Iralu, while Er. Mhathung Kithan delivered a welcome address, stressing the importance of geospatial technology in sustainable development. A keynote lecture titled “Satellite Technology and Applications – India in Space” was presented by Dr. B. R. Nagendra, a senior scientist from ISRO’s URSC Bengaluru. He elaborated on India’s growing capabilities in satellite technology and its societal impact.
Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar attended the event as chief guest. He commended the organizing institutions for bridging the gap between grassroots communities and cutting-edge space science, making ISRO’s achievements both accessible and aspirational.
The technical segment included a quiz competition, a presentation by Nilay Nishant on the societal benefits of space tech, and a live drone demonstration by NGISRSC. A standout moment was the “Meet the Scientists” session, where students engaged directly with space professionals.
Jyoti Kumari of Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha, secured first place in the quiz contest, followed by Eben L. Tsopoe (Fernbrook School) and Mhayani Ngullie (Isaiah Ability Higher Secondary School). Consolation awards recognized excellence among other young participants from various schools.
Altogether, the event witnessed participation from 17 schools across Wokha, with over 200 students immersing themselves in space-related activities and discussions. Dr. D. Chutia (NESAC) and DEO Gwayhunle Tep also addressed the audience, highlighting the importance of science literacy and innovative learning platforms.
