In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old construction worker, identified as Anwar Hussain, sustained serious injuries after allegedly being pushed off the fourth floor of an under-construction building at BOC area, Kohima, on Thursday evening.
Sources informed Nagaland Post that the incident followed a confrontation between the victim and a local youth, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, who was seen urinating on sand intended for construction. When objected to, the accused left the site but returned moments later with a group and allegedly pushed Hussain off the building during the ensuing altercation.
Eyewitnesses said Hussain first landed on the roof of a food park structure below, before falling onto the concrete pavement.
He was immediately rushed to Bethel Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Hospital sources confirmed that the victim suffered multiple rib fractures and underwent prolonged surgical procedures, starting 3 p.m. Friday and continuing late into the night.
Although the identity of the accused has yet to be officially confirmed, sources said he has been directed to bear the full medical expenses of the victim.
LMFN flays assault
Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland (LMFN) has strongly condemned the assault on a construction worker on July 31 at Kohima, wherein the victim was allegedly coerced to jump or thrown from a four-storied building while being asked to verify his Inner Line Permit (ILP) by some unauthorised youths.
In a statement through its press & media in-charge Anand Gurung, the forum stated that the victim, identified as Anowar Hussain, 22 years of age and a bonafide Indian citizen holding a valid ILP card, was abused and assaulted during the incident.
The forum condemned the act as “inhumane” and called for early justice and accountability for those responsible.
Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland urged government authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to ensure the prompt arrest and trial of the culprits. It stated that promoting community safety and upholding everyone’s rights was crucial and maintained that “no Indian should be harassed in the name of checking illegal immigrants or ILP, regardless of their background.”
The forum also expressed concern over the “panic” being created by rumours of Inner Line Permit frisking in various parts of the city and rural areas.
In this regard, it called upon the authorities to act immediately to restore peace and public confidence.
Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland stated that no unauthorised person should check documents of non-Naga Indian citizens under the pretext of checking ILP or identifying illegal immigrants. It also stressed that no non-Naga Indian labourer or tourist should be harassed in the state for any reason.
Appealing to the authorities to take necessary measures, Linguistic Minority Forum of Nagaland expressed hope that such incidents would not be repeated by any “young activists” in the future.
