JJM awareness at Mopungchuket

A one-day awareness-cum-focus group discussion (FGD) on the theme “Socio-Economic and Environmental Impact of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and Its Sustainability: An Empirical Study in Nagaland” was organised by the Department of Environmental Science, Nagaland University, Lumami, at the Panchayat Hall, Mopungchuket village, on August 2.
According to DIPR report, the programme was part of an ICSSR-funded research initiative supported by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
It was led by Project Director and HoD, Department of Environmental Science, Nagaland University, Prof. Ashutosh Tripathi, along with Co-Project Director, Dr. Ashutosh Tripathi; Prof. Ambrish Singh, HoD, Chemistry, NU Lumami; Asst. Prof. Nohochem Sangtam, HoD, Environmental Science, Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung; and the core research team.
Research Assistant, Imlirenla, moderating proceedings while Mopungchuket WATSAN chairman, Arentemsu, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the village’s efforts in sustainable water initiatives.
Prof. Tripathi, in his keynote address, underlined the transformative impact of JJM on rural water infrastructure and its role in social and environmental development. He noted that the project aimed to assess the mission’s grassroots implementation and sustainability through community engagement and data-driven policy input.
Implementation status of JJM in Mopungchuket was shared by the village WATSAN secretary, who outlined ongoing challenges in achieving 100% household tap coverage.
Dr. Tripathi spoke on “Community Participation in Water Management,” stressing the importance of stakeholder collaboration at the grassroots level. Asst. Prof. Sangtam presented research goals and urged cooperation from community members during field activities, which cover 25 villages in Mokokchung district. He also thanked PHED Mokokchung Division for its support and appealed for feedback from local stakeholders.
The programme was attended by Deputy Director Sports, Nagaland University, Dr. Harish Kumar Tiwari; WATSAN Committee members; council representatives; and other participants.
The event concluded with group discussions, water sample collection, and structured questionnaires.
