In a major boost to water sports and adventure tourism, Meghalaya will soon set up India’s first Slalom Course at Umtham River, Ri-Bhoi district, chief minister Conrad Sangma said.
On Thursday, the Cabinet approved the proposed acquisition of 14.6 acres of land along the Umtham River from Meghalaya Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (MIDFC) to develop the country’s only dedicated Slalom Course.
Sangma said the project will cover approximately 14 acres, including 8 to 9 acres of tree plantation along the riverbanks.
“This area is already known for Slalom, river canoeing, and kayaking events. Meghalaya has performed remarkably well in these disciplines, winning five medals in the last National Games,” the Chief Minister informed.
“This new course will take that success further and establish Meghalaya as a national hub for these sports,” he added.
Slalom is a thrilling water sport where kayakers race against the clock, navigating a challenging whitewater course filled with gates that they must pass through
The Umtham River, with its natural topography and flow, has been identified as the most suitable location for such a facility.
Sangma said the government believes the course will serve not only as a training and competition venue for professional athletes but also as a destination for adventure sport enthusiasts and tourists.
“We are very keen to promote this. Once fully developed, this facility will be unmatched anywhere in India,” the Chief Minister said.
