Bangladesh police, armed men attack M’laya village; BSF on alert

CorrespondentShillong, Aug 9

In a massive border security breach, suspected Bangladeshi police and criminals entered Indian Territory and attacked Indian villagers in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district. One of the villagers sustained injuries.
A police official said the incident occurred in Rongdongai village under the Nongjri–Nonghyllam area along the India-Bangladesh border in the wee hours of Friday.
A joint operation has been launched by troopers of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Meghalaya Police to nab the Bangladeshi intruders.
“Eight to nine Bangladeshis entered Rongdongai village, fired at the villagers and assaulted another,” Banraplang Jyrwa, the district police chief of South West Khasi Hills, said.
One of the Indian villagers identified as Balsrang A. Marak was injured after he was stabbed and assaulted by the Bangladeshi intruders.
“We have recovered an identity card of a Bangladesh police constable, handcuff, a magazine pouch , a pistol holster, radio communication sets, mobile phones, face mask, axe, wire cutter, Bangladeshi currency and other items at the site of the incident and several other items,” Jyrwa said.
“So far we have arrested four of the eight Bangladeshi intruders from two different location – one of them from Bagli and three others from Chibak forested area. We are still gleaning information from the arrested to find out the whereabouts of the remaining others,” Jyrwa said.
Asked on the seizure of the Bangladesh Police Constable Identity Card, Jyrwa said, “we are yet to ascertain whether the identity card was genuine one or fake one. Let us interrogate the arrested persons to ascertain the background of these intruders.”
Meanwhile, this fresh incident of intrusion by Bangladeshi nationals into Meghalaya has caused significant doubt on the BSF troopers guarding these remote areas.
“We will be investigating into this from where and how these Bangladeshi intruders sneaked inside our territory,” Inspector General of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, O.P. Upadhayay said.
