Nsong Students’ Union (NSU) backed by Zeme Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) and Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSU) has issued a final ultimatum on the department of school education to immediately appoint a qualified science teacher and English teacher at Nsong Government High School (GHS Nsong).
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, NSU president, Rangtalak Pame, claimed that NGHS was “the only government school in Nagaland where a chowkidar is teaching science and a carpenter is teaching maths.” He described the situation as “a complete negligence of the education department.”
“They say students are the future leaders, but the pillars of our nation have been destroyed knowingly,” Pame said. Over the past two and a half years, he said the union submitted 12 applications to various authorities — from grassroots officials to the principal director — without results.
Pame also alleged that the education department was “one of the most corrupt departments in Nagaland.”
He stated in the March 29, 2023 cross-transfer order the school’s only science teacher was replaced by a teacher who had already resigned.
He said the school remained without a science teacher for one and a half years until September 6, 2024, when the department posted a female teacher who failed to report within the six-day deadline and never joined the school.
Despite a show-cause notice, union said she was transferred back to her previous posting without serving a single day at GHS Nsong.
The union said on February 10, 2025 the department removed the school’s only English teacher instead of filling existing vacancies.
“Now, GHS Nsong has no headmaster, no assistant headmaster, no science teacher, and no English teacher,” Pame said.
He said GHS Nsong has the highest Class 10 enrolment among all government high schools in Tening subdivision.
With half the academic year gone, the union questioned how the syllabus would be completed without essential subject teachers.
The union warned that if the department failed to act “we will escalate our agitation” and the education department “will bear full responsibility for any casualties or untoward incidents that may occur.”
Asserting their demand was non-negotiable, the union demanded posting of qualified science and English teachers without delay.
“After waiting for two and a half years, this is our breaking point. Enough is enough. We demand justice for Nsong Government High School, we demand a future for our children, and we will not rest until this issue is resolved,” the union affirmed.
