Manipur police chief Rajiv Singh on Tuesday reaffirmed state government’s firm commitment to eradicating the drug menace while asserting that all offenders will face strict action without mercy.
Speaking to the reporters on the sideline of a government event related to the Har Ghar Tiranga Bike rally in Imphal, he stressed that combating drugs remains the state police’s top priority.
Responding to a query from the reporters regarding the recent suspension of five police personnel including an inspector in a drug related case, the DGP said that drug menace was a serious issue not only for the state but the entire northeast region and no drug offender, whether police officer or civilian will not be spared.
Singh said that drug menace was not only affecting Manipur but the entire northeast and all states were doing their best to combat the menace.
He said, “We are very strict, categorical and clear against anybody and any person, whether a policeman or a civilian, who is involved in drugs because it concerns the youth and the future generations of the state and the country.”
“We will be absolutely ruthless in dealing with it. The fight against drugs will go on irrespective of who is involved in this,” the DGP added.
On Sunday, the Manipur police department suspended five police personnel including an inspector in a drug-related case.
The case allegedly involved accepting a bribe of Rs six lakh for the release of drug peddlers while retaining the illegal drugs seized by them.
The case was related to an alleged release of drug paddlers apprehended with illegal drugs along Imphal-Moreh road (NH-102) by a team of state police commandos after accepting a bribe of Rs six lakh, though the seized drugs were retained, a few years ago.
Inspector Ningthoujam Devdas Singh, officer-in-charge of the Imphal East commando unit was suspended by an order of the DGP issued on August 10 while the other personnel of constable rank were put under suspension from their services by separate orders of the SPs of the respective districts where they are currently posted.
