The Drama Club of St. Joseph’s University (SJU), in collaboration with the Department of English, took center stage on August 12 with a captivating program under the theme “Peace Behind the Curtain.” The event aimed at celebration of drama, art, and creative expression.
In his speech, Dean of Social Sciences and Management, Prof. Dr. V.T. Vasagan, encouraged the students by highlighting that literature is a powerful catalyst for societal transformation. He underscored the significant role of drama, stating that “drama is not just some kind of imagination; it goes beyond imagination. “According to him, drama serves as a profound medium for expressing emotions and bringing real societal events onto the stage. He emphasized that drama does not end at a “simple read” but goes on to impact.
Introducing the theme, Drama Club, President, Toto Zhimo, noted the irony embedded in it, pointing out that there is always chaos behind the curtains, noting that the origins of drama lie in Miracle and Mystery plays that were aimed to spread peace and joy. He reminded the audience stated that “peace is not always the loud absence of conflict, but the quiet presence of understanding.” “Peace behind the curtains teaches that real harmony often begins in quiet spaces-in hearts we nurture, words we choose, and the way we treat others when no one is watching,” he added.
The program featured a vibrant mix of performances by students and club members alike, from soulful songs and lively dances to musical renditions, mimicry, and captivating storytelling. The program’s highlight was the dramatic re-enactment of Easterine Kire’s novel “Don’t Run, My Love” — a moving tale centered on Visenuo, a widow, and her daughter Tuonou, and the events that unfold after their encounter with a handsome stranger during harvest time.
The first session of the program was anchored by Dzüveno Keyho, a 5th-semester student from the Department of English. The second session was jointly hosted by Toketoli H. Rochill from the 3rd semester, Department of Biotechnology, and Aghato, also from the 3rd semester, Department of English. The event saw the presence of SJU’s administrative heads, faculty members, students from the English Department, Drama Club members, and enthusiastic participants from various other departments.
