Kishtwar Cloudburst Claims 23 Lives, Injures 75; Rescue Ops Underway

A devastating cloudburst struck Chositi village in the Padder sub-division of Kishtwar district on Thursday, leaving at least 23 dead and 75 injured. Rescue operations are in full swing, with helicopters deployed to evacuate the wounded.

Officials confirmed that a massive joint effort involving civil authorities, police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF is underway to manage the crisis. The injured are being shifted to nearby hospitals, while damage assessment continues.

Minister of State (PMO) Jitendra Singh stated that rescue teams have reached the site and are providing medical aid and logistical support. He assured that his office is receiving regular updates and all necessary assistance will be extended.

Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the tragedy, directing all relevant agencies to intensify relief efforts. “Condolences to bereaved families and prayers for the quick recovery of the injured,” he posted on X.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also weighed in, noting that verified information from the remote region is slow to arrive. He confirmed speaking with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and said all possible resources are being mobilized.

Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma, along with the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Kishtwar, has reached the affected site to oversee rescue operations. Sharma noted that the cloudburst occurred near the final vehicle drop-off point for the Shri Machail Yatra, where temporary shops had been set up.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar announced the suspension of the Machail Yatra until further notice. He urged the public to remain calm, assuring that SDRF, Red Cross, and other agencies are actively engaged.

Communication challenges persist due to the region’s shadow zone status, and unconfirmed reports suggest structural damage. Locals report that heavy rains and poor connectivity are hindering access and updates.
