Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation (NZPO) has welcomed the state government’s decision to constitute the Reservation Review Commission to address disparities in government employment.
In a joint statement, NZPO president Zandi Domta and general secretary Enchang Hiaka acknowledged the farsightedness of the state’s early leaders who, recognising the imbalance in educational and economic status among various tribes, had earmarked reservation of certain posts for the less-advanced communities. This, they said, enabled some members of the backward groups to secure government employment and work harmoniously with those from more advanced tribes over the decades.
While appreciating the initiative taken by the present government under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, NZPO expressed hope that the Commission would thoroughly examine all aspects and evolve an arrangement to ensure opportunities for the deserving, backward and less privileged sections of society.
The organisation said such a step was necessary to help the weaker sections catch up and to maintain a sense of belonging, in the same manner as SCs/STs and other reserved categories enjoy in the country.
NZPO, however, pointed out that despite decades of implementing reservation policy in the state, vast disparities still existed between advanced and backward tribes in terms of government employment.
Citing the data published in local dailies on June 12, 2025, it said the figures were a glaring example of the need for the policy to be implemented in letter and spirit for justice to prevail.
NZPO expressed confidence that the Commission would leave no stone unturned in finding out the ground realities and come up with remedial measures to narrow the gap between the privileged and the less privileged sections.
It urged the government to continue to take wise and just decisions in matters of such importance, especially in the interest of the underprivileged classes.
