NESO to hold protests against illegal influx

CorrespondentSHILLONG, AUG 17

The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Sunday announced that it will hold simultaneous sit-in protests across the state capitals in the region on Monday to seek immediate detection and deportation of illegal immigrants from the region.
“Respective states government’s in the region must take immediate steps to detect and deport all illegal immigrants from the North Eastern States,” NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said. Expressing concern on the growing of influx of illegal immigrants into the region, Jyrwa said, NESO, an apex body of eight students’ associations of seven northeastern states, demanded a special intensive revision of electoral rolls with the intention to delete names of doubtful citizens and illegal immigrant from the voters list.
“NESO urged the Union government and the states governments in the region to act decisively and to start the process of identifying illegal migrants and deport them,” he said.
NESO also demanded immediate implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) regulation to tackle the unabated influx of illegal migrants in Meghalaya.
In 2019, the Meghalaya Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to include Meghalaya under the purview of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 and implement ILP. However, the Centre was still examining the Meghalaya government’s proposal for implementing ILP in the State.
Meanwhile, according to The Assam Tribune report, Samujjal Bhattacharya, chief advisor of the All Assam Students’ Union said that: “Both in Tripura and Assam, constitutional safeguards must be ensured. In Tripura, of the state’s 40 lakh population, only 15 lakh are indigenous Tripuris. Assam is heading in the same direction, with illegal immigrants settling even in tribal belts and blocks.”
