The first-ever Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Conference of Nagaland cum Live Surgery Workshop was conducted on August 15 and 16 in Kohima, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of surgical care and awareness in the state.
Organized by the Department of Surgery, Putuonuo Hospital, Kohima, in collaboration with the Plastic Surgery Foundation Mumbai and the Association of Surgeons of Nagaland, the two-day conference aimed to enhance understanding of the scope and applications of plastic and reconstructive surgery among surgeons and the broader medical fraternity.
It also focused on improving the quality of patient care in Nagaland.
The event brought together a faculty of renowned national and regional plastic surgeons, including experts from premier institutions such as Dr. Amresh S. Baliarsing from Bombay Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital and Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. Nilesh G Satbhai, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Professor Dr. Dushyant Jaiswal, RIMS, Imphal, Manipur, Professor Dr Akoijam Ibohal Singh, STNM Hospital, Gangtok, Sikkim, Dr. Choden Norbu, NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, Dr. Badamutlang Dympep and RIMS, Imphal, Dr. Nehar Sinam.
The scientific sessions covered a broad spectrum of topics, highlighting the role of plastic surgery in areas such as trauma care, pressure sore management, birth anomalies, chronic ulcers, cancer reconstruction, and aesthetic procedures.
A major highlight of the conference was the Live Surgery Workshop, held at Putuonuo Hospital, which was conducted in accordance with National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines and approved by the Nagaland State NMC. Notably, eight patients underwent reconstructive surgeries completely free of cost, including surgery, hospitalization, and follow-up care, reflecting the event’s commitment to patient welfare and accessibility.
The conference received an overwhelming response, with 85 registered participants representing 28 hospitals and medical centers from across Nagaland, including Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, Zunheboto, and Peren as well as from Guwahati.
Attendance included a diverse group of medical professionals, such as general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, pediatricians, ENT specialists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, medical officers, and surgical trainees.
