HC continues stay; asks DC Chümou to report on Medziphema-Molvom row

DIMAPUR, AUG 21 (NPN)

The Kohima bench of Gauhati High Court has directed the deputy commissioner (DC) of Chümoukedima to submit a detailed report in the form of an affidavit on the alleged continuing hostility between Molvom and Medziphema villages despite an earlier interim order of the court.
Hearing WP(C) 129/2025 filed by Molvom Village Council and chief/GB of Molvom, Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita on Thursday observed that allegations made in the petitioners’ additional affidavit were “serious in nature” and required the DC’s response.
Counsel for the petitioners, A. Zhimomi, submitted that although the court, by order dated July 24, 2025, had directed the State respondents to protect the lives and properties of Molvom villagers and not to change the name of Molvom village or Molvom railway station, villagers continued to face hostility from Medziphema. He informed the court that 16 families from Molvom had been forced to leave Medziphema town and that Molvom villagers were prevented from accessing the Medziphema market. School-going children of Molvom were also allegedly denied entry into schools at Medziphema.
The petitioners further submitted that an FIR was lodged on August 18, 2025, before the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur. Despite peace bonds executed at the initiative of the DC, it was alleged that Medziphema villagers were patrolling the boundary area and obstructing Molvom villagers from selling their farm produce.
Appearing for the Medziphema Village Council (respondent no.7), senior advocate C.T. Jamir, assisted by K. Tsukru, sought three weeks’ time to file affidavit-in-opposition, citing his recent engagement in the case. The State respondents, represented by government advocate Bichano Kithan, also sought extension of time for filing their response. Both prayers were allowed.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on August 26, 2025. The interim order of July 24, restraining any change in the names of Molvom village and Molvom railway station and directing protection of Molvom villagers, will continue until the next date.
