A minor girl of Class IX was found dead, allegedly due to cyber bullying, in her house in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Saturday morning.
The police as well as local sources said that the girl was found hanging when her parents were away from home.
The tragic incident sparked widespread concern with locals suspecting that the minor might have been driven to take the extreme step after a video clip, allegedly recorded and circulated without her knowledge, went viral on social media.
Following the incident, a local joint action committee (JAC) was formed and sought that those involved in the circulation of the video be identified and arrested immediately, holding them accountable for abetment to suicide. Moirang police station has registered a case in connection with the incident. The body was later taken to RIMS mortuary, where a post-mortem was conducted in the presence of a magistrate with video documentation.
Meanwhile, the JAC staged a sit-in protest at Thamnapokpi Bazar today, pressing for immediate justice. The committee warned of intensified agitation if action is not taken by August 25.
Students of the school where the deceased student studies also joined the protest while holding “Stop cyber harassment,” among other slogans.
“Save our students”, “Punish the guilty”, “Protect the innocent,” other placards read.
