Rotten chicken stock seized, godown sealed in Dmu

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, AUG 27 (NPN)

Concerns over food safety in Dimapur resurfaced Wednesday after municipal authorities, during an inspection drive, uncovered a bulk stock of rotten chicken stored at a poultry godown under New Market.
According to Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) Ward-19 councillor, Kili N. Sumi, the DMC veterinary food safety and public health team, along with councillor staff, detected a foul stench during an inspection at a godown owned by one Rajiv Uddin. On checking, they found rotten chicken stock kept inside a freezer.
Although the proprietor was absent, his brother, Kadir Uddin, and an employee, Fayjul Islam, present at the site, claimed the stock had been kept aside for disposal later. They denied selling rotten meat to customers, saying it was meant to be dumped at the designated disposal site. Kili informed that the godown and its associated shop were sealed, adding that further measures would be taken after proper investigation and consultation with DMC chief executive officer (CEO).
Meanwhile, GB of New Market and president of Dimapur District Poultry Suppliers Union, Khekishe Aye and general secretary, Lashito Awomi, condemned such malpractice and appealed to all poultry shop owners/suppliers to maintain hygienic standards and cooperate with the DMC.
