The Nagaland Tug of War Association (NTWA) women’s team returned home with a bronze medal in the Senior Women 500 Kg category at the 38th Senior National Tug of War Championship held in Shirdi, Maharashtra, from August 22 to 25.
In a press release issued by team manager Kuzhovesa Soho, the eight-member women’s squad, accompanied by two officials, represented Nagaland at the national event. Their participation was fully sponsored by the chief minister of Nagaland, Dr. Neiphiu Rio.
Team Nagaland clinched the bronze medal after defeating Uttar Pradesh in two consecutive pulls. This marked the first appearance of the women’s team at the national level, following a two-week preparation period. Their performance was lauded for showcasing strength, skill, and determination.
The team was led by Vikehenuo Zumvu (Captain), with athletes Vekhonielu Curhah, Haizuyile, Thejaneinuo Thevo, Sezolu Luruo, Medongunuo Thevo, Neivi Metha, and Keneithonuo Sanchu. The squad was managed by Kuzhovesa Soho and coached by Vemele Thingo.
To celebrate their achievement, the team visited Wet & Joy Water Park in Shirdi on August 25, where they held a thanksgiving fellowship and spent the day in recreation. The manager expressed deep appreciation for the athletes’ dedication and the coach’s guidance, which contributed to the team’s success.
Special gratitude was extended to chief minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio for his sponsorship, and to NTWA president Dr. Er. Vekho Swuro for logistical support throughout the campaign. The NTWA also acknowledged 13 Assam Rifles Commandant Col. Tarun Rana and his officers for providing training facilities since June, benefiting both the women’s national team and the men’s international team.
The association appealed to the people of Nagaland for continued support and cooperation in future endeavors.
Meanwhile, the NTWA informed that the eight-member men’s team from Nagaland is currently undergoing intensive training in Patiala in preparation for the World Outdoor Tug of War Championship, scheduled to be held in Nottingham, England, from September 4 to 7. The team will be part of the Indian contingent under the aegis of the Tug of War Federation of India (TWFI) and is set to depart for Nottingham on September 3.
