Zhaleo underscores role of teachers; warns against AI

Dimapur

Advisor of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio, while addressing the Common Teachers’ Day programme held at Bundrock Chapel Hall, Patkai Christian College, on September 3, reflected on the origin and significance of Teachers’ Day, commemorating the legacy of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan—former President of India, philosopher, and educator.
He stated that the day serves as a reminder to honour and appreciate the invaluable contributions of teachers to education and society.
Highlighting the pivotal role of educators, Zhaleo described teachers as architects of the future, entrusted with shaping students into responsible citizens. He expressed confidence that children under the guidance of dedicated teachers are in safe hands. While acknowledging the rise in literacy rates in the state, he lamented the declining quality of education, which he said fails to empower students meaningfully.
Addressing students, Zhaleo urged them to value their teachers and pursue quality education that connects them to global opportunities. He observed that many graduates tend to seek only white-collar jobs, often appearing directionless post-education. In this regard, he encouraged youth to explore entrepreneurship and business ventures, noting that the government was actively promoting schemes in both business and Agri & Allied sectors.
On the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Zhaleo described it as a transformative force capable of diagnosing diseases, reshaping job markets, and supporting educational processes. However, he cautioned both students and educators against excessive reliance on AI tools, warning that it could erode the credibility and depth of learning. He specifically discouraged overuse of applications such as ChatGPT, stating that true knowledge comes from active engagement, not shortcuts.
He also presented District Awardee winners of Chümoukedima district namely; Pekinto Y Jimo, GHSS Naga United and Tovini Sema, GHS Diphupar B with citations and awards.
The program was chaired by Mhasino Kuotsu Metha, Principal Godwin Higher Secondary School and began with an invocation by president of Chümoukedima District Pastors Fellowship. Welcome address was delivered by John Lotha, DEO Chümoukedima.
Bendangchuba, advisor ANPSA spoke on the significance of Teachers Day under the theme of “Teachers We want.” A special number “You Raise Me Up” to commemorate the event was belted out by the students of Cosmopolitan School.
The vote of thanks was delivered by president, ANPSA Chümoukedima Unit and the program concluded with a benediction by Pezalhoukho George, Principal, St. Joseph Higher Secondary School.
