Nepal protest: Wife of ex-pm dies, ex-pm and fM attacked

KATHMANDU, SEP 9 ( AGENCIES)

Amid violent demonstrations in Nepal, Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Nepal Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, died after suffering severe burn injuries when their residence in Dallu was set on fire. She was taken to Kirtipur Burn Hospital but did not survive, according to family members, as quoted by India Today.
The country’s ex-Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Arzu Rana Deuba, the foreign minister, were assaulted by protesters.
The demonstrators broke into the residence of Deuba in Budanilkantha, Kathmandu. Footage shows the ex-minister bleeding from his face in the aftermath of the attacks.
Before the authorities arrived at the scene to rescue Deuba and Arzu, their residence was desecrated.
The Gen Z-led protests took on an increasingly fierce tone in Nepal. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oil’s house was set on fire, his Finance Minister, Bishnu Prasad Paudel, was chased through Kathmandu streets, show videos.
Paudel, 65, was seen running through the streets of Kathmandu, with scores of people behind him.
A young protester, from the opposite direction, jumped and kicked the minister down, who was thrown off balance and crashes into a red wall.
The protesters also vandalised the residence President of Nepal, former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ at Khumaltar in Lalitpur and demonstrated in front of former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba’s house at Budhanilkantha in Kathmandu.
The protests, which began on Monday with demands that the government lift a ban on social media and tackle corruption, reignited despite the apps going back online. Kathmandu police spokesman Shekhar Khanal said that several groups had refused to obey a curfew on Tuesday, telling AFP there were protesters in the street in many areas, and “cases of fire and attacks”.
