The Nagaland Wushu Association (NWA) has announced that the Nagaland State Wushu Championship (Sanda event) will be held from October 21 to 23, 2025, in Kohima. The championship will feature competitions across senior, junior and sub-junior categories and is expected to attract participants from district associations across the state.
The announcement was made during the annual general body meeting of the NWA, held on September 11 at the Nagaland Olympic Association office in Kohima. Addressing the meeting, NWA general secretary Akhozo described district associations as the “backbone and foundation” of Wushu in Nagaland and urged them to actively identify and nurture grassroots talent.
Akhozo highlighted that Wushu is officially recognised by both the Indian Olympic Association and the Government of Nagaland, providing strong institutional support. He encouraged members to move beyond routine activities and focus on medal-oriented disciplines, while also setting long-term goals such as preparing athletes for the 2036 Olympic Games, for which India is expected to bid.
In preparation for the championship, the NWA conducted a two-day judges’ seminar and technical training programme from September 11 to 12 at the NOA office. Led by NIS-certified coach Gabriel Khamo, the session aimed to enhance officiating standards and equip participants with foundational knowledge of Wushu (Sanda). The training also enabled participants to initiate Wushu academies in their respective districts.
17 trainees from Noklak, Peren, Kohima, Phek, Dimapur, Mokokchung and Mon took part in the programme. In his concluding remarks, coach Khamo encouraged the trainees to remain committed to nurturing young talent and expressed confidence in the role of homegrown referees and technical officials in elevating the sport’s standards.
Under the leadership of NWA president and Advisor for CAWD & Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, MLA, the association has resolved to facilitate the establishment of Wushu academies in selected districts, subject to proper verification.
