TAU, MHU and LAU extend support for alignment 1 of NH-702

DIMAPUR

Tobu Area Union (TAU), Mopong Hongkong Union (MHU), Longchang Area Union Dimapur (LAUD) and Longchang Area Union Chümoukedima (LAUC), has conveyed its firm support to the three units of Konyak Union, Konyak Union Tobu Unit, Konyak Union Mopong Hongkong Unit, and Konyak Union Longchang Unit, in their collective demand for Alignment 1 of National Highway-702, as per the first notification and original alignment published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India.
A press release issued by presidents of all four CSOs stated that the alignment was not merely a road project but a lifeline for over 46 villages and 5 Administrative Headquarters in the upper region of Mon, which remains the most underdeveloped part of the district, while adding that it also provides a vital link connecting people to Mon and Longleng.
They however expressed deep concern that certain individuals, driven by vested interests, seem to be persuading the NHIDCL and State Government to consider shifting NH-702 from its original alignment (Option 1) to Option 3, without adequate regard for larger public interest.
“Such a move, if pursued, would undermine the collective aspirations of the people. The priority must be to promote inclusive development, particularly in transport, communication, and economic growth, rather than to hinder or divert essential road connectivity” the release stated.
It further cautioned that this is not a time when voices of public should be disregarded, nor should developmental priorities be reshaped to serve limited interests.
The three CSOs thereby urged chief minister and his cabinet to address the matter with utmost seriousness and sound judgment, free from political influence, so as to safeguard the broader interests of the State.
“Any decision or policy implemented against the will of the public will invite public unrest”, the unions warned.
