Indefinite ban on Niuland-Zhadima road takes effect

Staff ReporterDIMAPUR, SEP 16 (NPN)

An indefinite ban on vehicular movement along the 27-km Niuland–Zhadima road, jointly imposed by Hovishe and Ghotovi villages under Niuland district, began Tuesday from 6 am onwards.
The two villages stated that ban was imposed to protest against neglect of the road, which has become deplorable.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, Ghotovi village head GB, G. Kahoto Zhimomi, stated that the road was constructed by North Eastern Council (NEC) in 2001. However, he said the road had been left unmaintained since then despite repeated appeals.
Zhimomi asserted that the road not only benefits the two villages but also adjoining districts, but successive governments have failed to take action.
Asked about the prospect of lifting the ban, Zhimomi stated that the protest so far remains peaceful but resolute. He affirmed that the blockade would continue until the government took immediate steps to convert Niuland-Zhadima road into “a durable, all-weather road.”
Zhimomi pointed out that the village council had earlier submitted representations to the state government and even met with minister roads and bridges, G. Kaito, who inspected the site and assured necessary steps.
However, he said no follow up action was taken.
The issue resurfaced after incessant rains triggered landslides and rockslides along NH-29 on September 14, forcing commuters to take Niuland-Zhadima route.
One JCB was reportedly pressed for clearing works, but villagers alleged that machine itself was in “pathetic condition” highlighting the government’s apathy.
Asked about intervention from district administration, Zhimomi informed that DC Niuland along with officials visited the area but clarified that the district administration could do little since the matter lay with the state government. He stressed that until the state responded with concrete steps, the ban would remain in force.
He reminded that villagers themselves repaired sections of the road in the past and even restored a broken bridge without any government assistance.
The head GB stated that certain culvert of the bridge was still undergoing repair with the assistance of the villager.

WSKH supports ban on Niuland-Zhadima road
Western Sumi Kukami Hoho (WSKH) has extended support to the indefinite ban of vehicular movement on Niuland-Zhadima road called by Hovishe village council and Ghotovi village council.
In a press release, WSKH president Khehovi Chophi and general secretary Shiwoto Chishi appealed to the state government to take prompt initiative for construction of the lifeline road.
Also, highlighting the dilapidated condition of existing hanging bridge at K. Hetoi village, WSKH emphasised urgent need to construct the bridge in the interest and welfare of the general public.
Further, WSKH stated that Yeveto village and neighbouring villages were facing immense hardship due to flooding following the swelling of Zubza river. The hoho stated that many residential houses were in danger. Therefore, WSKH has requested the state government to provide assistance to the affected villagers and take prompt initiative to address the issue.
