Immanuel College celebrated its 31st Fresher’s Day on Saturday with Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Chang welcomed the new batch of students and congratulated them for securing admission into what he termed a “prestigious institution” where lives and futures are shaped. He reminded students that college life was not merely about earning degrees but also about self-discovery, building lifelong friendships, and preparing to face real-world challenges.
Sharing insights from his own academic and professional journey, Dr. Chang encouraged students to set clear goals, maintain a positive outlook, and explore diverse career paths. While acknowledging saturation in state government jobs, he emphasized that opportunities abound for those willing to persevere and innovate.
He also urged students to consider careers in public administration, stating that administrative service offers a platform to serve people at the grassroots while gaining valuable experience. “Success is not just about grades or jobs, but about how we contribute to shaping society,” he said, adding that achievements should benefit the community.
Highlighting the importance of attitude, Dr. Chang likened it to a hot air balloon that rises not because of its colour but because of what is inside. He further noted that only 25% of knowledge comes from classroom learning, while the remaining 75% is drawn from informal experiences, relationships, and extra-curricular activities.
Recounting personal setbacks, including his unfulfilled ambition to pursue MBBS, Dr. Chang said failures should be treated as stepping stones to success. He concluded by urging students to nurture confidence, resilience, and faith, quoting Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Imlimaongla and Khwenlo Kemp. Invocation was offered by EU president Lamthio, while ICSU president Yinai Kano delivered the welcome address.
