An unidentified male body was recovered Wednesday morning along the under-construction two-lane road from Lerie colony, Kohima, to Pfuchama village.
When contacted SDPO Kohima (South), K Vekato Chishi said police received information around 7:30 a.m. and rushed to the spot. A mobile phone, a country-made .22 pistol, and a magazine were recovered from the deceased. Preliminary assessment indicated death due to a gunshot injury, though the exact time of death and motive could not be ascertained. Details would be established after post-mortem and further investigation, he added.
Based on limited information from a person who called the deceased’s phone, Police said the victim reportedly belonged to the Lotha community. However, further calls could not be established.
An eyewitness, Diethovi Chase, engaged with a construction firm, said he discovered the body around 6:30 a.m. while on site inspection. On noticing the weapon, he alerted his employer’s family, after which police were informed. The proprietor also donated a traditional Angami shawl to drape the body.
Police sources said personnel from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Dimapur, were being roped in to assist the investigation.
