Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) has strongly condemned the alleged malpractice at a Fair Price Shop (FPS).
WSYF through its vice president Mughaka Chophy and secretary Botoka Zhimo claimed that the owner of the FPS was allegedly found not only charging above the government-prescribed rates but also robbing beneficiaries of 1kg rice per person in the name of “carriage charges.”
The youth body asserted that such acts were “nothing less than daylight robbery” committed against the poorest of the poor. “It is shameful that individuals who are entrusted with the sacred duty of serving the underprivileged stoop so low as to exploit them for personal profit,” WSYF stated.
It described those shop owners as “dishonest” and “profiteers” thriving at the cost of the hungry and snatching away the rights of the most vulnerable sections of society.
In this regard, WSYF has demanded that the food and civil supplies (F&CS) department immediately launch statewide checks of all FPS outlets, expose every single shop indulging in such scams, and take the harshest possible action, including licence cancellation.
It demanded that no mercy should be shown to those who cheat the poor and erode public trust in the system.
The youth body maintained that prompt intervention would protect the interests of the needy and uphold the credibility of the public distribution system.
Meanwhile, WSYF has called upon the general public to remain vigilant. It urged anyone encountering such fraudulent practices at FPSs to report the matter immediately to the responsible authorities.
WSYF also reiterated that it would not remain silent in the face of such injustice. It underlined that the rights of the poor were non-negotiable, adding that any attempt to rob them would be met with strong resistance and relentless exposure.
