SJU conducts workshop on healthy alternatives

DIMAPUR

Department of Social Work, St. Joseph University (SJU), Chumoukedima, in collaboration with the District Mental Health Programme, District Hospital Dimapur, organised a one-day workshop on “Exploring Healthy Alternatives to Addiction” on September 23 at the SJU Auditorium.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness on addiction and equip participants with tools to promote healthier lifestyles. Dr. Temsuyanger, SMO (Psychiatrist), District Mental Health Programme, Dimapur, spoke on “Addiction & De-Addiction,” emphasising the importance of awareness and recommending the term “dependence” over “addiction.”
Psychiatric social worker Niemhanu presented on “Better Alternatives to Addiction,” offering a recovery roadmap that included self-improvement, goal setting, avoiding triggers, and building support networks.
Counsellor Vincent Neikha shared insights into the pattern of addiction and stages of recovery—initial struggle, mental withdrawal and detoxification—through a personal recovery story.
