Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed deep concern and outrage over the recent death threat issued against Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, during a televised debate.
In a press statement, NPCC said such an explicit threat to the life of a senior national leader was unacceptable in a democracy and must be treated with utmost seriousness. It said the threat made by a BJP spokesperson from Kerala could not be dismissed as casual or emotional rhetoric, but was a dangerous and deliberate provocation reflecting the disturbing trend of normalising threats and violence against political opponents.
NPCC said it stood firmly with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in demanding that Union home minister Amit Shah initiate immediate and decisive action against the individual responsible. Anything less, NPCC said, would signal complicity on the part of those in authority and embolden similar reckless acts in the future. Citing the tragic loss of leaders such as Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, NPCC said the nation had already borne the devastating consequences of political assassinations. It said such threats must therefore be addressed with utmost seriousness and urgency.
Stating that political differences must be resolved within the framework of the Constitution through dialogue and democratic means, NPCC said to openly issue a death threat against the Leader of the Opposition, who represented millions of citizens, was nothing short of an attack on India’s democracy itself.
The party called upon the Centre to not only bring the offender to justice but also to set a strong example against what it described as “barbaric and homicidal mindsets.” NPCC further urged every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation, to condemn the act and uphold the sanctity of democratic traditions.
