The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), under the Home Department, Government of Nagaland, officially launched the “Safer Nagaland” weather mobile application during a formal programme held at the Conference Hall of the NSDMA, Civil Secretariat, Kohima, on Friday.
The launch marks a significant milestone in the State’s ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness, improve risk reduction measures, and enhance access to real-time meteorological information through the use of digital technology.
Advisor for NSDMA, Z. Nyusiethe Nyuthe, who officially launched the mobile application, stated that the initiative represented more than just the introduction of a new technological platform. He described it as a demonstration of Nagaland’s evolving capacity to harness modern technology for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of its citizens.
Nyuthe further observed that timely information dissemination and enhanced public awareness remain vital instruments for minimizing disaster risks and saving lives during times of emergency.
He noted that the “Safer Nagaland” mobile application provides a unified and easily accessible platform for the dissemination of real-time weather updates, localized forecasts, and early warning alerts.
The application enables citizens across the State, including those in remote and rural areas, to access essential weather and disaster-related information through their mobile devices at any time. Nyuthe said the capacity directly connects individuals and communities with critical, life-saving data that can assist in protecting lives, safeguarding property, and facilitating informed community-level planning.
Nyuthe also highlighted that the “Safer Nagaland” mobile application is an extension of the NSDMA’s previously launched weather portal. Together, the portal and the mobile application constitute an integrated framework for weather monitoring, forecasting, and public awareness across Nagaland.
By extending these services to mobile platforms, the NSDMA ensures that accurate and timely information reaches all citizens—from urban centers to the most remote villages—thereby strengthening last-mile connectivity in disaster response and preparedness.
Expressing appreciation to the project team, Advisor Nyuthe commended the Additional Secretary of NSDMA, Sentiwapang Aier, and Joint Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, for their leadership, vision, and dedication in successfully steering the project from conception to completion.
He affirmed that their collective efforts have transformed an ambitious concept into a practical and efficient digital instrument that will significantly enhance the State’s preparedness and resilience in the face of weather-related hazards.
He further extended commendation to the entire NSDMA team, partner organizations, and all stakeholders involved in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing the initiative. Their dedication, he said, embodies a shared mission of building a safer and more resilient Nagaland that is capable of adapting to emerging climate challenges.
Nyuthe assured that the NSDMA would continue to strengthen its network of automated weather stations, expand its forecasting capabilities, and enhance public engagement through outreach and education programmes. He expressed confidence that the “Safer Nagaland” application will serve as a vital instrument in safeguarding both lives and livelihoods across the State.
Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer of NSDMA, delivered a detailed presentation on the features and functionalities of the “Safer Nagaland” mobile application.
He informed that the application was developed as the official weather and disaster information system of the NSDMA, functioning under the aegis of the Nagaland Centre for Disaster Management and Atmospheric Research (NCDAR). He explained that the NCDAR operates as a specialized research and monitoring body within the NSDMA, focusing on improving disaster resilience and promoting climate adaptation through scientifically informed, data-driven strategies.
Dr. Ruangmei emphasized that the “Safer Nagaland” application provides location-specific meteorological data, early warning signals, and long-term climate trend analyses.
These features are designed to support operational decision-making in key sectors such as disaster management, agriculture, urban and rural planning, and infrastructure development. He urged the general public to download and actively use the application to remain informed about weather developments and disaster-related alerts.
The event was chaired by P. Inaka Sema, Assistant Manager (Geology Unit), NSDMA. A short video presentation showcasing the structure, user interface, and operational functions of the “Safer Nagaland” application was screened for the participants.
