The brutal and mysterious death of a 22-year-old woman, whose body was found near her residence at Old Ministers’ Hill Colony, Kohima, on October 25, has sparked widespread condemnation from civil society organisations.
AWO: Expressing deep shock and outrage, the Angami Women Organisation (AWO) described the incident as gruesome and inhumane, stating that such acts have no place in a civilised society.
While welcoming the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), AWO president, Neithono R Sothu and general secretary, Atono Kense demanded a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. AWO also appealed to the public to support the investigation and remain vigilant against violence and injustice towards women.
TWUN: Tenyimia Women Union Nagaland (TWUN) termed the murder a direct assault on the safety and dignity of women, especially distressing given Kohima’s reputation as one of the safest cities for women. In a condemnation note, TWUN president, Zhonelu Tunyi and general secretary, Atono Nyuthe urged law enforcement agencies and the State Government to ensure swift arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator(s), and called upon civil society to reinforce a culture of respect and protection. “Justice must prevail—enough is enough,” the union stated.
ASU: Angami Students’ Union (ASU) condemned the killing in the strongest terms, describing it as a cold-blooded act that has created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
In a condemnation, ASU president, Diezevisie Nakhro and general secretary, Rajuselie Chücha called for immediate and exemplary action from the State Government and law enforcement agencies, and urged authorities to address growing concerns over the safety of women and youth. Reiterating its commitment to uphold the sanctity of human life, the ASU has declared that it will not remain silent in the face of brutality and will persist until justice is fully served.
“The ASU will continue to stand firm against any act that undermines the sanctity of human life. We shall not remain silent in the face of such brutality and will persist until justice is fully served,” the union stated.
ASU further called upon the State Government and law enforcement agencies to take decisive and exemplary action against the perpetrators and restore public faith in the rule of law. The union affirmed that it would continue to monitor the case closely and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family.
TSUD: Tenyimi Students’ Union Dimapur (TSUD) also expressed deep sorrow and condemned the murder, describing it as a crime that has shaken the conscience of society. TSUD called for a thorough investigation and urged the community to stand united against violence, promoting peace, unity, and respect for life.
NAWA: Northern Angami Women Association (NAWA) expressed deep shock and outrage over the incident, describing it as a heinous act that has shaken the community. Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, NAWA president, Kedisenuo Keditsu and secretary, Ketsokhrieü Kesitsu urged authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice without delay. The association emphasized that the safety and dignity of every individual, especially women and children, must remain a top priority, and called for stronger preventive measures to avert such tragedies in future.
AKMWC: Association of Kohima Municipal Ward & Council (AKMWC) also condemned the murder, terming it “uncivilized and inhuman.” In a statement, AKMWC president, Thejao Sekhose, lamented the loss of a promising young life and called upon law enforcement agencies to promptly investigate and take stern action against the perpetrators. The council appealed to citizens to extend support and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family. “Let us all unite our hearts in prayers for her family during this time of pain and grief,” AKMWC stated.
AASJC: Alumni Association of St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama expressed profound sorrow over the untimely demise of its alumnus. Remembering her as a committed and compassionate individual, the association described her as an inspiration to many. It called for a fair and transparent investigation to ensure that justice is served and reaffirmed its solidarity with the grieving family.
MYO: Mima Youth Organization (MYO) expressed deep shock and outrage over the inhuman nature of the crime, describing it as a grave act of violence that has shaken the conscience of the community.
In a statement, MYO president, Mhaphruovilie Livi and general secretary, Metebo- Sote called upon law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable without delay.
The organization extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and affirmed its stand against all forms of violence. It further urged citizens to remain vigilant and united in demanding justice and upholding the dignity of human life.
CSU: Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the tragic incident and said that words cannot truly express the pain and anguish caused by such a heinous act.
In a statement, CSU president, Menokhrielie Chalieu and assistant general secretary, Vikhotsotuo Hama extended condolences to the bereaved family and loved ones, the union prayed for strength and comfort as they endure this unimaginable tragedy.
CSU also strongly condemned the brutal act and reaffirmed its demand for justice, urging the concerned authorities to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
NPWF: National People’s Women Front (NPWF), under the National People’s Party (NPP) has expressed profound grief and outrage over the untimely death of the young woman, stating that her dreams and future were cruelly snatched away.
In a statement, NPWF national president, Åne-ü Khaming extended solidarity to the bereaved family and called upon authorities to ensure that the perpetrator(s) face the full weight of the law. “Justice delayed is justice denied, and we owe it to her memory to act swiftly and decisively,” NPWF stated.
The organisation further emphasized the urgent need to build a society where women can live without fear, and where their safety, dignity, and rights are protected at all times.
