Dimapur Sporting Club (DSC) dethroned defending champions Headhunters FC (164 Naga TA) with a commanding 2–1 victory in the grand finale of the 9th edition of Captain (Late) N. Kengurüse, MVC Memorial Football Tournament at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on Thursday.
The final, played before a packed and vibrant crowd, witnessed Dimapur SC display fearless determination and tactical brilliance to end the Headhunters’ reign. From the opening whistle, the Dimapur side seized control of proceedings, setting a blistering tempo with quick transitions and sustained attacking pressure that immediately unsettled the defending champions.
Dimapur SC made their intentions clear as early as the third minute when Ngansang found the back of the net with a precise finish, catching the Headhunters defence off guard. The early goal set the tone for the match, forcing the champions to chase the game from the outset. Building on their momentum, Rhitso Mero doubled the lead in the 11th minute with a composed strike inside the box, sending Dimapur’s supporters into loud celebration.
At 2–0 up within the first quarter-hour, Dimapur SC looked firmly in control, maintaining defensive discipline while continuing to threaten on the counter. Headhunters, however, showed the resilience that had defined their campaign, regrouping after the break to press higher and create chances. Their efforts were rewarded in the 55th minute when Haotingmang converted from close range, cutting the deficit and reigniting hopes of a comeback.
Despite growing pressure in the final stages, Dimapur SC stood resolute, defending with structure and composure to deny Headhunters any further breakthrough. The final whistle was met with a roar from the stands as Dimapur SC completed a remarkable 2–1 victory to lift the coveted title.
The win marked a fitting conclusion to Dimapur SC’s consistent campaign, having earlier defeated Mavericks FC 2–0 in the quarterfinals and edged past Lüshe FC 2–1 in the semifinals to book their place in the final. For Headhunters FC, who had stormed past Langsa Hill FC in the semifinals with dominant form, the loss brought an end to their bid for consecutive titles.
Dimapur SC’s triumph was defined by teamwork, belief, and relentless energy — a performance that not only dethroned the reigning champions but also underscored their rise as one of the most formidable sides in Nagaland football.
