Nagaland P. Shilu Ao Memorial indigenous games, Tug of War C’ship underway at Longjang

MOKOKCHUNG, NOV 7 (NPN)

The opening ceremony of the two-day P. Shilu Ao Memorial Indigenous Games Festival cum 2nd Tug of War Championship was held at Longjang Village, Mokokchung on November 7. The event was graced by ADC and Chief Executive Officer of Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), Atsungba Walling, as the special guest.
According toa DIPR report, addressing the gathering, Walling emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous culture amidst growing influence from Western traditions. He urged the community to adopt only those external influences that align with local values and cautioned against cultural dilution. Commending the Longjang Riongsanger Cultural Society for organizing the festival, Walling stated that such initiatives play a vital role in safeguarding heritage and honoring the legacy of Late P. Shilu Ao.
“Late P. Shilu Ao was not only the first Chief Minister of Nagaland but also a patriot and a true son of the soil who dedicated his life to the people of Nagaland,” Walling remarked.
The programme began with a welcome address by Barrick, Longjang Village Council, followed by a short speech from president of Longjang Senso Mungdang, M. Temjen Jamir. The Longjang Riongsanger Cultural Society presented a cultural song, after which various indigenous games were showcased, reflecting the rich traditions of the community. The festival continues to celebrate the life and contributions of Late P. Shilu Ao while promoting cultural pride and unity through traditional sports and performances.
