Advisor for CAWD and Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, on November 14 underscored the need for skill-based education, emphasising that learning must extend beyond literacy to prepare young people to become employers rather than employees. He was speaking at the Annual Parents’ Day of Chakhesang Mission Higher Secondary School (CMHSS), T Chikri Pfutsero.
Khamo stressed that the modern world increasingly rewards entrepreneurship, calling for the introduction of clubs and short-term skill-development programmes in schools. He cautioned that education without morality, integrity and responsibility poses risks to institutions and society, adding that honesty and good health remain essential despite technological and financial progress.
He noted that today’s education landscape has changed dramatically, placing greater responsibility on both parents and students, especially regarding the use of mobile phones, which he warned can negatively influence young minds. He urged collective efforts to maintain checks and balances and to recognise the school’s central role in shaping students.
Reaffirming his opposition to lifting the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act of 1989, Khamo said its impact on society remains significant and called for stronger enforcement mechanisms. He argued that poor-quality liquor is not a justification for removing the Act, noting that the state often receives substandard imported products.
Khamo also highlighted the ongoing mass cleanliness drive in Phek district, informing that committees comprising the district administration and civil society bodies have been formed to ensure effective implementation and reward high-performing towns and colonies. He urged the public to participate actively.
Addressing teachers, he described them as nation builders and urged them to uphold Christian values and social responsibility.
He emphasised that education must encompass morality, rationality and quality learning. He pointed out that despite rising numbers of graduates and degree-holders, unemployment persists due to mismatches between skills and market needs.
Khamo encouraged students to acquire skills beyond their academic qualifications and to aspire to become employers. He also suggested introducing a Commerce stream at the school to support entrepreneurial exposure.
Praising the hardworking nature of Pfutsero residents, he urged the community to uphold these positive traits. He further highlighted Chakhesang traditions of respecting women and called for renewed commitment to their protection.
In the occasion, the Employee Professional Development Fund (EDPF) was inaugurated by the Khamo. The launching programme was presided over by Rukuzo Ruho, Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA).
Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by principal of CMHSS, Thujongoyi Dazo, and invocation by executive secretary, CBCC, Rev. Dr. Chekrovei Cho-o. A speech on behalf of the parents was delivered by Esther Puro.
During the programme, the school choir and CMHSS staff presented choral pieces, with special presentations by Primary I & II, a musical theatre piece, sub-junior items and a folk song by the students.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by chairman of the school managing board, Rev. Dr. Kowepe Kanuo followed by benediction prayer by pastor, CBMCC, Rev. Dr. Kuzhopoyo Tunyi.
