DIMAPUR

Naga Students’ Union Jorhat (NSUJ) organized its 60th Fresher’s Day–cum–Cultural Fiesta & Book Release on November 15 at Frederick & Mary Downs Auditorium, Eastern Theological College (ETC), under the theme “Nagas without Borders: Reclaiming Identity, Strengthening Solidarity.”
The event celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Naga people and the vibrant diversity of Northeast India, with cross-cultural performances by students and guests reflecting unity, coexistence, and shared identity.
Gracing the occasion as chief guest, Dr. Chumben Murry, advisor to Chief Minister of Nagaland, lauded the programme, describing it as a state-level function. He urged senior students to guide freshers with sincerity, stating that such mentorship cultivates responsible individuals. Reflecting on the theme, Dr. Murry emphasized that diversity among Nagas should be seen as strength, not division. “I am proud to be a tribal, not to be an ST,” he remarked, encouraging youth to rise above limitations and pursue excellence.
Guest of Honour, Enoli I. Ilika Zhimo, principal scientist, CSIR-NEIST, addressed the gathering in the second session, motivating students with the message that “Failure is not the opposite of success, but a part of success.”
The programme was chaired by Rev. Prof. Dr. Phanenmo Kath, ETC, and opened with a prayer by Rev. Prof. Dr. Yangkahao Vashum. Greetings were delivered by Rev. Prof. Dr. Razouselie Lasetso, principal, ETC, followed by a welcome address from NSUJ President, Eno Mughaka Kiba.
Dr. S. Ekonthung Ezung, advisor, NSUJ, delivered the keynote address, while the book was released by Dr. Chumben Murry and dedicated by Rev. Prof. Dr. Sashikaba Kechutzar, vice-principal, ETC. This year, NSUJ welcomed 189 freshers into its fold. The event witnessed a turnout of approximately 850 attendees, including students from various universities and members of diverse communities.
NSUJ expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, participants, and well-wishers for making the 60th edition a memorable milestone in its journey of cultural celebration and academic solidarity.
