Chakhroma Students’ Union has sought enquiry into the chemical spillage in Dzümha River, which has led to death of fish and aquatic species.
In a representation addressed to the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Medziphema, Chümoukedima district, the CSU president Menokhrielie Chalieu and general secretary Rokosielie Geisuo said that chemical substance was allegedly discharged into Dzümha river by certain individual, resulting in a significant spillage that has caused widespread death of fish and other aquatic organism.
CSU said the incident has not only damaged the river’s ecological balance but also posed serious health and livelihood risk for resident who relied on river for domestic use, agriculture, and fishing.
Pointing out that effect of chemical spillage was already visible, the union said unnatural discoloration and foul odour was emitting from the river.
It said large number of dead fishes were accumulating along various stretches potentially contaminating downstream water sources used by local communities.
In the light of the seriousness of the situation, CSU has urged the administration to initiate an immediate enquiry to ascertain the source of the chemical contamination and identify the person(s) responsible.
CSU also demanded water quality testing in the affected areas to determine the extent of pollution and its potential health hazards.
The union has urged the administration to take strict action against individual(s) found responsible under relevant environmental protection laws.
Further, CSU suggested undertaking necessary measure to prevent further contamination and restore the ecological health of Dzümha River.
It also called for strengthening monitoring and awareness mechanism to prevent the recurrence of such harmful activities in the future.
